Prairie farmers lose millions in revenue each year due to wheat midge damage. Estimates of the extent of midge damage loss have been $19 million in yield loss and $21 million in grade loss.
Fortunately, after 15 years of perseverance, Dr. Ron DePauw and his team of researchers from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada delivered a solution.
AC Goodeve VB is one of the first commercially available midge tolerant red spring wheat varieties in Western Canada. It is the result of moving a single gene (Sm1) into spring varieties using traditional plant breeding techniques. The variety is a blend of AC Goodeve and AC Intrepid. The AC Intrepid provides a refuge for resistant midge. Without the AC Intrepid the resistant midge would attack the Sm1 gene, making it ineffective.
AC Goodeve is a great fit for any wheat grower, but is particularly suited for growers in areas where midge is a production risk. Learn more at www.midgetolerantwheat.ca.
